Popular Songs
(20th Century Second Half + 21st Century)
This is a cumulative list of my 684 favorite songs compiled from January 1955
through December 2011 (684, because that's how many months I have been
compiling favorites, and I add approximately 12 per year). Although a few of
these songs were hits before 1955 (the earliest is from 1950), I did not hear
them until after the beginning of that year when I started listening to and
following pop music. Many of these songs are familiar big pop and country
single hits of the period, but many are album cuts and obscure little hits and
non-hits as well. There are even some non-commercial field recordings done by
my friends and relatives that are part of my musical-listening life as well.
Due to the extremely wide range of types of music listed here--rock, pop,
rock n’ roll, country, pre-rock n’ roll pop, soul, rhythm and blues, gospel, dance,
jazz, folk, rockabilly, doo-wop, instrumental, novelty, surf, disco, reggae,
movie themes, Broadway show tunes, even some kiddie
songs (introduced to me by my grandnieces), and classical, etc.--virtually
every kind except for rap*--many have described my tastes as
"eclectic." Please keep in mind that this list does not reflect my
favorites RIGHT NOW, but rather a cumulative list encompassing those favorites
I had when I was a kid, a teenager, and an adult.
*Actually, it has been pointed out that rap does occur in a handful of my
Hall of Fame songs, e.g., #99, “Get Ready For This” by 2 Unlimited.
The list of my 540 favorites through 1999 is computed through a logarithmic
series of point totals for all the songs based on a "top ten" list of
my favorites at the end of each month. The songs at the top end of this list
represent songs that have placed on this monthly "top ten" of mine
for many months or even years at a time.
The additional 144 songs added since 2000 are listed here in
alphabetical order.
The most significant revision to the ranked list occurred in March 1999,
when the song "Renegade" by Nikka Costa--#5 on my 1995 list--
accumulated enough points (5,087) to rise all the way to the top of this list
and bump "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart (5,065) down to second place.
(In May 2002, I finally located a German pressing 45 of my all-time #1
favorite record, after more than a decade of searching. I first heard
"Renegade" in 1990, although it was actually released in Europe and South America--but
never in the USA--a
